Cleaning something is a physical act with irreversible outcomes. A wool coat that has felted does not come back. Please read this page — it is short, and unlike most disclaimers it is here for a reason.

Test first. Every time.

Before applying any method from this site to a whole item, test it on a hidden area — an inside seam, a hem, the underside of a cushion — and let it dry completely before judging the result. Water alone marks silk, viscose and unlined suede. A method that is safe on one item is not automatically safe on the next one that looks like it.

The manufacturer’s label wins

Where our guidance and the care label on your item disagree, follow the label. We write about fabrics in general; the manufacturer knows what is in that specific garment — the dye, the interfacing, the adhesives, the finish. Ignoring a “dry clean only” instruction usually voids any warranty and may make a claim impossible.

Chemicals

• Never mix cleaning products unless a guide explicitly says a combination is safe. Chlorine bleach and ammonia produce toxic gas. Bleach and vinegar do too.
• Ventilate the room when using solvents, and keep them away from open flame.
• Keep all products out of reach of children and animals.
• If you have a skin condition or a respiratory condition, wear gloves and a mask, and prefer the gentlest method offered.
